Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America

“Celebration of Life”

Honoring Stefania Dignum

Held August 2007 at Michigan Fiber Festival:

If you are reading this, Stefania Dignum-Sveinbjarnardottir has definitely influenced your life in a wonderful way!! As you probably know, it was Stefania who single-handedly (with much loving support from her husband Ray, of course) made the presence of the Icelandic sheep breed a reality in North America. Had it not been for her persistence and dedicated passion for the sheep she valued during her childhood in Iceland, the rest of us would not be enjoying our wonderful, elegant Icelandic sheep flocks here on this continent. Stefania is the one who made this a possibility in our lives. (For fellow members here in the states, our gratitude also goes to Barb Webb, whose steady perseverance survived the many hurdles in obtaining this sheep breed’s allowed entrance into the US).

In conjunction with the 2007 Michigan Fiber Festival, in Allegan, Michigan (August 18 & 19), we held a special get-together to “Celebrate the Life of Stefania Sveinbjarnardottir-Dignum”. Some attendees knew Stefania personally; others had never actually had the opportunity to meet face-to-face. Folks brought photographs, personal stories they shared with the group; and others simply attended to hear more about Stefania’s ambitious and energetic life and how she so drastically impacted all of ours. Although we mourn the loss of Stefania deeply, we wanted to reflect not only the sadness we felt as a result of her passing, but also all the joy she brought to us as a result of her unique and passionate personality. It was a wonderful and unforgettable event.

Thanks to all who could join us in Michigan to remember and Celebrate Stefania’s Life!! We know all of the rest of you were there in spirit.
